Six Queer Breaths (2016)

Inverted custom-printed latex balloon, six artist's breaths, helium, ribbon, thumbtack

A balloon that reads ‘six queer breaths’ is inverted and filled with six of the artist’s breaths and the rest helium for a six-day exhibition. Inverting the balloon conceptually creates a microcosm within the space, and also implicates everyone else, conceptually placing the audience ‘inside’ the balloon reading the text outward. There is an investigation between spaces through this inversion: there is the hostile environment inside the newly created microcosm (only six breaths to survive), which is at odds with the surrounding environment. A thumb tack glued to the wall adds to this.
